Lady Pioneers Take the Win on a Competitive Game

The Lady Pioneers faced the Highlanders of Gordon State on 9.25. Both teams came ready for a very intense game. The game was back and forth for the first half. SMC had a few chances early but could not get on the scoreboard. Gwen Orr started in goal and had to come up with a big one-on-one save halfway through the first half. The Pioneers outshot Gordon State 5-4. The breakthrough came with :13 left in the half when SMC capitalized on 1 of 5 corner kicks. Laura Giraldo played a great ball in the box, and the Pioneers were determined to put it in the net. The Highlanders goalkeeper gave her best effort to keep it out but her last punch to the ball went in the net. The half ends at 1-0. Both teams regrouped and came out swinging in the second half. The Pioneers would double the score 4 minutes into the second half after a free kick from Tiffani Rasmussen found its way through the defense to Harleigh Payne that played it past the keeper. Gordon State would cut the score in half when the SMC defense would give up an own goal on a GSC corner kick. The lady Pioneers would not let the Highlanders gain momentum. Alanna Hilton got the third goal of the game from a Beyonce Williams pass 30 seconds after conceding the goal. Gwen Orr finished with 4 saves on the day.

SMC moves to 7-1-1. The Pioneers' next match is on 9.30 at home against Region 10, USC Lancaster.
