Spartanburg, S.C. – A hot start was just enough to propel visiting Thomas University to a 104-93 win over the Spartanburg Methodist College men's basketball team on Monday evening. The two teams were tied at seven in the first four minutes of the game before the visitors went on a 10-0 spurt to take control of the game.
The Pioneers (3-7) were paced by a season-high 31-point effort from Bryan Bayonne, who made 9 of 15 field goals and 10 of 11 free throws in the loss. Kenny Burns added 28, DeAnthony Ross and Richard Rojas each had 12. Burns has been in double figures in all 10 games for SMC. Plus, Burns also had six assists; meanwhile, Bayonne filled up the stat sheet with three assists and two blocks.
The Nighthawks (5-4) had five in double figures with Jallin Lee and Ja'Vian Baker, who had 25 and 21 points, respectively. Lee hit three 3-pointers and Baker added four 3-pointers om the first 20 minutes as the visitors held a 60-39 lead at the halftime break. The two were joined in double figures by Tyson Anderson (17), Jordan Howe (11) and Noah Lattin (10).
Despite the 21-point deficit at halftime, twice, the Pioneers cut the deficit to four. Down 81-77 with 8:45 left in the game, a 13-4 spurt by visitors ended the comeback hopes for the host Pioneers.
Next, the Pioneers will be idle for final exams and return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 10 when they host Voorhees University at Bridges Arena at 7 p.m.
