WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The first six games of the season for the Spartanburg Methodist College had all been decided by four points or loss. That was not the case on Friday afternoon as the Pioneers posted a 66-53 win over host Carolina (N.C.).
Spartanburg Methodist College (2-5) first year head coach Blake Jackson shuffled up his lineup and got the outcome that he was seeking – a win. Kenny Burns and Bryan Bayonne came off the bench for the first time on the season, scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively. Both Burns and Bayonne have been in double figures in all seven games. The efforts by Burns and Bayonne helped SMC outscore Carolina, 41-17 on bench points.
Columbia (1-6) was led by the double double from Trey Crawford, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Bruins.
DeAnthony Ross for SMC went coast-to-coast for a layup that put the visitors ahead 36-35 with 16:38 left in the contest. The layup sparked the visitors for an 8-2 spurt, who would remain in front for the rest of the contest.
Bayonne finished the game with eight rebounds and four assists. Kelton Teasley also had a solid all-around game with five points and seven rebounds as it was an all-around effort by the entire team for the win.
Next, SMC will remain on the road to face Campbellsville on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. and Cumberlands on Saturday, Nov. 23 as part of the Lou Cunningham Classic.
