SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Spartanburg Methodist and Washington Adventist traded baskets for the first three minutes before a 23-2 run by the visiting Shock ahead for the rest of the men's basketball contest on Saturday night. Washington Adventist withstood a late rally by Spartanburg Methodist on its way to an 90-81 win in the Continental Athletic Conference matchup.
Spartanburg Methodist College senior Bryan Bayonne nearly willed a comeback effort for the Pioneers as he scored 29 of his 31 in the final 20 minutes. Down by as much as 21 in the first half, SMC managed to get the deficit to as little as six on a pair of occasions.
Washington Adventist scored nine of the final 11 points to spoil the late rally by the host Pioneers. WAU was paced by a pair of 23-point efforts from Jalen Anderson and Rande Harper. Chase Cooke added 20 in the win.
Bayonne was joined in double figures for SMC by Kelton Teasley and Tavarez Lacey, who had 13 and 12 points, respectively. After shooting 39.1% from the field in the first half, the Pioneers came back to shoot 51.7% in its final 20 minutes.
Next, SMC will host Life University on Monday at 5 p.m. at Bridges Arena.
