Lady Pioneers Fall to Catawba Valley
SMC hosted Catawba Valley Community College on Thursday, March 2th. The Pioneers fell the CVCC both games.
Game 1: Lost 4-6
5 hits, 7 strike-outs, and 2 errors
The Pioneers struggled to get going in game one. Cox was on the mound for the pioneers and gave up 9 hits and 6 runs. SMC tried to come back in the 7th but it wasn't enough to pull out the win.
Game 2: Lost 5-10
6 hits, 5 runs, and 6 errors.
Catawba Valley came out game two of the second inning putting up 4 runs and SMC struggled to keep up. Carver started on the mound and gave up 8 runs but only 2 of the 8 were earned runs. SMC had a lot of errors in game two that hurt. Reine Wood and Gracie Cobb both had home runs in the second game to help the Pioneers score.
"CVCC had a 19-1 record before playing us. I know they have had a decent program for the past couple of years and I knew these games weren't going to be easy wins. Some of the girls were talking about their record before the game, so I don't know if we were already mentally defeated at that point or not. We simply didn't show up to play. We had a lot of bad calls from an umpire but even if you take out the bad calls, we still did not play our best. Six errors in one game are hard to come back from and try to win. If our bats had been on and we had backed up those errors offensively then it would have been different but we didn't. They know what they did and did not do and we just have to continue moving forward. We have USC Union on Sunday and USC Salk on Monday, we have a lot of work to do before playing four region games in a row!" -Coach Hill
