Spartanburg, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team extended its winning streak to five games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of St. Andrews, winning 8-0 (in six innings) and 4-1 on Thursday afternoon.
SMC (20-13) started the day with a no-hitter by sophomore pitcher Bailey Kiser, who struck out four Knights in the win. The Kingwood, Texas, native received ample offensive support from her teammates, who collected eight hits, including a home run and four RBIs from sophomore shortstop Carson McCowan.
After taking a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the second inning, SMC plated three runs in both the third and fourth innings. McCowan contributed an RBI single in the third and a three-run home run in the fourth. With a seven-run lead, SMC ended the contest with an RBI groundout by Gracie Starnes.
In the nightcap, SMC erased an early 1-0 deficit by scoring twice in the second inning on RBI singles by Jacie Ross and Emily Kelly. Lydia Faulk added an RBI single in the third, and LeAnn Curry contributed another in the fifth.
In the circle, SMC starting pitcher Maddie Handy went the distance for the win, allowing just three hits while striking out six.
Next, SMC will host No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grant Field.
