Columbia, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team swept a doubleheader against Columbia College, winning 4-2 in game one and 8-4 in game two on Monday afternoon.
The Pioneers (23-16) combined strong pitching and timely hitting to complete the sweep of the Koalas. In game one, SMC plated four runs on five hits. The top three in the batting order accounted for three of the five hits and three of the five RBIs. Leadoff batter Lina Schwippert led the team with two RBIs.
SMC scored one run in each of the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings. Adriana Stump Frias added a solo home run in the third. In the circle, Bailey Kiser allowed nine hits and struck out four to earn the win, improving her record to 8-9 overall.
In game two, the Pioneers recorded 11 hits en route to an 8-4 victory. SMC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Stump-Frias. She finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs to lead the offense.
After taking the early lead, SMC extended it with two runs in the second on a pair of RBI singles. Columbia College narrowed the deficit to 6-4 with two runs in the fifth, but SMC responded with two more runs in the sixth to seal the win.
In the circle, Kyla Quiles pitched a complete game—her seventh of the season—striking out five and improving her record to 10-5.
Next, SMC will host Brewton-Parker College in a doubleheader for their home finale at 2 p.m. at Grant Field.
