
Pioneers Win Pair on First Day of Fastpitch Dreams Classic
North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team picked up a pair of six-inning wins on its first day of action at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic with a 9-0 victory over Waynesburg and a 16-8 win over Chestnut Hill on Sunday.
SMC (8-6) started the day with a 9-0 shutout of Waynesburg. Adriana Stump-Frias had two RBI and two hits in the win to lead the offense. Bailey Kiser was dominant in the circle with five strikeouts, allowing five hits in the win. Emily Kelly came off the bench to drive in a pair for the Pioneers.
SMC pounded out 20 hits in the win over Chestnut Hill. Five-different Pioneers – Lydia Faulk, Kiley Holland, Gracie Starnes, Jacie Ross and Alex Stuckey – each had three hits. Starnes and Handy each had three RBI to lead the offensive onslaught.
The Pioneers scored in all six innings as they got on the scoreboard with six runs on six hits in the first inning for the early lead. Then, they added to their lead with two in the second. Chestnut Hill scored twice in the bottom of the second to make it an 8-2 game.
Alex Stuckey drove in a run in the third on a RBI single for a 9-2 lead for the Pioneers. The Griffins scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third, cutting the deficit to 9-8 before SMC came back with three in the top of the fifth on four hits including a two-run home run by Adrianna Stump-Frias. The Pioneers plated two more in the sixth to complete the 16-8 win.
SMC will return to the diamond on Monday at 9 a.m. to face Wilson College.
