North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team put the finishing touches on a 5-0 mark on its Spring Break trip to the Fastpitch Dreams Classic with a pair of 8-0 wins on Tuesday over a pair of NCAA Division III teams, Cedar Crest and Rosemont.
The two wins on Tuesday raise the record for the Pioneers to 11-6 on the season as they return home for a six-game homestand.
Going back to the wins on Tuesday, it was a combination of timely hitting and solid pitching that continue to propel the Pioneers to the win column. In the first game of the day against Cedar Crest, SMC was victorious in five innings. For SMC, they plated four runs in the second and four more in the fourth on its way to the win.
Jacie Ross, Emma Kennington, Adriana Stump-Frias and Gracie Starnes each had two hits. Ross drove in a team-best three runs in the win. In the circle, Maddie Handy and LeAnn Curry combined on the shutout. The two combined to strikeout five, allowing just three hits in the shutout. The two used just 86 pitches – 58 for strikes in the win.
The second game of the day against Rosemont, Bailey Kiser pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out four in the win. Reigning CAC hitter of the week Gracie Starnes had three more hits and Jacie Ross drove in two more for the win.
With a 1-0 lead, SMC broke the game wide open with a six-run fourth inning. The big blow in the inning was a two-RBI single by Carson McCowan.
Next, SMC will host Columbia (S.C.) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday, Mar. 13.
