SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The nationally ranked No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett College softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader against Spartanburg Methodist College, earning 4-1 and 8-0 (six innings) victories at Grant Field.
The Grizzlies improved to 29-8 overall and remain undefeated in Continental Athletic Conference play at 7-0. In the opener, GGC built a 4-0 lead before SMC plated its lone run of the day in the sixth inning. The Pioneers stranded seven base runners, with a pair of hits coming from Gracie Starnes and Carson McCowan. Adriana Stump-Frias drove in the lone run with a sacrifice fly.
Georgia Gwinnett plated two runs each in the third and fourth innings, providing enough offense for the win. SMC starter Bailey Kiser allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out two. For GGC, Kailynn James went the distance, improving to 10-3, allowing eight hits and striking out six.
In the nightcap, the Grizzlies extended a 1-0 lead by scoring two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to secure an 8-0 run-rule victory. SMC was limited to three singles in the game, recorded by Jacie Ross, Alex Stuckey, and Lydia Faulk.
Four different Grizzlies—Casey Beaver, Sara Roussel, Morgan McQuagge, and Angelica Gallegos—each recorded two hits. Gallegos, McQuagge, and Kayla Good drove in two runs apiece. GGC starter Annalise Jarvis was dominant in the circle, striking out 10 to improve her record to 14-2.
Up next, Spartanburg Methodist will host Paine College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16, beginning at 1 p.m., and return to action on Tuesday, April 22, against Brewton-Parker College at 2 p.m. Both matchups will be held at Grant Field.
