SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team split a doubleheader with Paine College on Wednesday afternoon, losing game one 12-4 and winning game two 4-3.
The Pioneers (21-16) picked up their 12th home win and ended Paine's five-game winning streak with the game two victory.
The Lady Lions (11-17) jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in game one en route to a 12-4 win. Paine recorded 15 hits and capitalized on three SMC errors. Leadoff batter Ana Cobas went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. She was one of four Lady Lions with multiple hits. Of their 15 hits, 13 were singles.
SMC managed eight hits, with Adriana Stump-Frias collecting two and driving in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single in the fifth inning.
In game two, the Pioneers secured a walk-off win when Carson McCowan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
Down 3-2 in the sixth, Maddie Handy tied the game with an RBI double, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. In the seventh, Jacie Ross and Lydia Faulk reached base via walks. After two outs, Stump-Frias drew a walk to load the bases. Two pitches later, McCowan was hit by a pitch, bringing home Ross for the winning run.
Offensively, SMC had just four hits, with Stump-Frias collecting two more. In the circle, Kyla Quiles earned the win, improving her record to 8-5 with her fifth complete game.
Next, SMC will hit the road to face Columbia College in a doubleheader on Monday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
