SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team extended its winning streak with a doubleheader sweep of Bluefield, 4-0 and 4-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (15-6), who have won seven of eight at home, continued to display their prowess in pitching and timely hitting. Game one of the doubleheader saw SMC starter Bailey Kiser limit the Rams to just one hit – a fourth-inning single by Alexis McDuffie.
The offense gave Kiser support with 12 hits and four runs. Adrianna Stump-Frias, Carson McCowan, and Savannah Evans each had two hits in the win, and four different Pioneers picked up an RBI on the day. SMC plated a run in four different innings on its way to the win.
Game two saw the Rams plate their lone run of the day in the seventh, spoiling the back-to-back shutout for the SMC pitching staff. Nine more hits from the SMC offense were enough for pitchers Maddie Handy and Kyla Quiles. Gracie Starnes, who hit a solo home run in the third, and Handy each had two hits. For the second straight game, SMC plated a run in four different innings to secure the win.
Of note for fans: Sunday's doubleheader against Brevard has been postponed. The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday in a doubleheader at NCAA Division II USC Beaufort. The doubleheader has been moved up to a 1 p.m. first pitch in Beaufort.
