HIALEAH, Fla. – After weather on Thursday moved the game to the early hours of Friday morning, Nicholas Giesing of Florida College scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 78th minute as the Falcons defeated the Spartanburg Methodist College men's soccer team, 2-1.
SMC (3-4-1, 0-1 CAC) had a 15-11 advantage in shots, including a 10-6 margin in shots on goal. The Pioneers' Will Waters recorded a match-high five shots in the contest.
Florida College (1-3-1, 1-0 CAC) went ahead in the 14th minute when Devon Berry scored for the early lead.
Waters and the Pioneers were kept off the scoreboard after a pair of shots in the first half. SMC got one past the Falcons goalkeeper as Sebastian Puyo scored in the 38th minute.
With the game tied at 1, the Pioneers sought the go-ahead goal, and nearly had it when opportunities were saved by Florida College goalkeeper Filip Borka, who made nine saves in the second half – five of which came in the final 45 minutes.
After a foul was called on the Pioneers in the 78th minute, Giesing successfully converted a penalty kick. In the closing minutes of the contest, a Michael Torres shot for the Pioneers was saved by Borka and a last-second shot by Davin Starkie was blocked to end the contest.
Next, SMC will face Florida National on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 9:30 a.m. and Keiser on Monday, Sept. 23 at noon.
