SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After a slow start in the first half, the Spartanburg Methodist College came back with a stronger presence as they put pressure against Columbia College and its defense on its way to a 1-1 tie in its first home NAIA tilt on Friday afternoon.
SMC (0-1-1) held a 9-8 advantage in shots; however, the intensity of the game was not reflected in the statistics. One of the shots was the equalizer when Adrian Johnson successfully placed a penalty kick with a left-foot touch in the 80th minute.
Columbia College (0-0-1) got on the scoreboard when Alexis Salazar headed the ball past the SMC defense into the back of the net in the 35th minute.
After the equalizer by Johnson, he nearly had the go-ahead goal when an attempt hit the crossbar in the 85th minute.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Pioneers, who will return to the pitch on Sunday for a 5 p.m. road tilt against Life University.
