SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College men's soccer team battled 90-plus degree heat on its way to a 1-0 win over Brewton-Parker College at the Nash Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.
With a 2 p.m. kickoff temperatures were in the low 90's when the game started, the two teams battled the hot temperatures in a very physical contest. The Pioneers ended the scoreless contest in the 19th minute after a shot by Brandon Porras ricocheted back into play and to the feet of teammate Sebastian Puyo for a goal.
The goal was just enough as the Pioneers outshot the Barons by a 10-5 margin. The win was the first shutout for SMC goalkeeper Francesco Molinar and it marked the first career win for Pioneers' head coach Doug Smith.
To complement the strong play by Molinar in goalkeeper and late in the contest, preserving the shutout was a diving header defensive save by defender Joseph Christy.
The win raises SMC record to 1-2-1 on the season as they will return to the pitch for a road contest to face Columbia College on Tuesday, September 3rd at 7 p.m.
