HIALEAH, Fla. - Two goals in the final 23 minutes by host Florida National were the difference in a 3-1 loss for the Spartanburg Methodist College men's soccer team on Sunday morning.
The Pioneers (3-5-1, 0-2 CAC) picked up the equalizer when Brandon Porras scored his second goal of the season. Porras took a pass from teammate Michael Torres, who picked up his team-best third assist for a goal.
The Conquistadors (1-3, 1-1 CAC) quick set the tone with four shots in the first 10 minutes before finding the back of the net in the 12th minute as Filipe Sette Ribeiro scored.
After a header attempt by Florida National in the 47' went wide left, Porras nearly had the equalizer in the 49' but a Conquistadors defender took away the opportunity. Momentum remained in favor of the visitors with a corner kick in the 49' and Porras had a shot that went wide left. Undeterred, Torres connected with Porras for the equalizer.
Florida National came back and put pressure on the SMC defense, who blocked shots in the 57th and 64th minute, respectively. Later, the Conquistadors got the go-ahead goal when Diogo De Grutolla Ramblas scored. They added an insurance goal in the 81st minute when Filipe Sette Ribeiro scored his second goal of the contest.
Pioneers goalkeeper Francesco Molinar had five saves in the contest; meanwhile, the Conquistadors goalkeeper Juan Manuel Fermoselle had three saves.
Before returning to South Carolina, the Pioneers will face No. 18 Keiser on Monday at noon in West Palm Beach.
