Advance, N.C. – Returning to the pitch after a 25-day hiatus for its first competition since Hurricane Helene, the Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to host Carolina University on Tuesday.
Spartanburg Methodist College (7-3) was the first on the scoreboard when Caroline Taylor scored an unassisted goal in the 38th minute. For Taylor, it is her fourth goal of the season.
Carolina University (3-5-4) came back with the equalizer on a Sidney Smith goal in the 40th minute.
Tied at 1 in the early moments of the second half, the Bruins went ahead when Alexa Anderson found the back of the net in the 46th minute. Carolina added to its lead when Ashley Sanchez scored in the 52nd minute.
The Pioneers' Camila Moscoso scored in the 85th minute for the final margin.
Pioneers head coach Kyle Campbell was pleased of how the girls dealt with adversity and battled through the elements. "This is a tough loss after not being a play for 3 and half weeks. Our connection was a bit off, and we struggled to get in the flow of the game."
Next, SMC will travel to Takoma Park, Maryland for a pair of Continental Athletic Conference matchups where they will face Washington Adventist on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:15 p.m. and Fisher on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.
