SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Columbia International University for its third-straight shutout on Thursday night.
The first-year NAIA program ended a scoreless tie in the 51st minute after Sierra Gies stole a midfield pass by the visiting Rams. Then, the freshman sent the ball up to the lower third of the field to Camila Moscoso, who dribbled towards the left side of the field before finding Kaylee Damsen, who fired a shot to the lower right of the goal past the diving CIU goalkeeper for a goal.
"We are really excited for the win that we got tonight," said SMC head coach Kyle Campbell. We had great energy from our bench tonight, who were really engaged in the match from start to finish. We are super excited to defeat a great CIU program."
Offensively, SMC outshot CIU by a 16-13 margin and Pioneers' goalkeeper Ava Wilson stretched her scoreless play between the posts to 344:24 with the win. Wilson matched a season-high with five saves on the afternoon. With the win, SMC raises its record to 4-1 as the Rams of CIU fall to 1-1.
Next, Spartanburg Methodist College will host Carolina College on Monday, October 9th at 3:30 p.m. and Bob Jones University on Friday, October 13th at the Nash Soccer Field. The Pioneers are 2-0 when they are playing at home in 2024.
