SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two goals by Kaylee Damsen in the final 10 minutes sparked the Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team to a 4-2 win over Carolina University on Monday afternoon.
Damsen and the Pioneers spoiled the comeback hopes of the visiting Bruins with a pair of late goals. The final 45 minutes saw most of the possession on the Carolina side of the pitch.
To set up the game-winning goal, C.J. Hawkins moved the ball down the left side of the field where she found Damsen and just feet in front of Bruins goalkeeper Kloe Totel outside the 18-yard box. A quick flick by Damsen over the head and hands of Totel regained the lead for the Pioneers.
Moments later, again, Damsen was in the right place at the right time as she scored in the 85th minute when there was a scramble in front of the goal.
Carolina University (2-3) erased a 2-0 deficit, scoring in the 51st and 78thminute by Natalie Puskar and Morgan Meyers, respectively. The Bruins outshot the Pioneers by an 11-8 margin.
Spartanburg Methodist College (5-1) got on the board in the 10th minute when Addie Hawkins and C.J. Hawkins teamed up for a goal. Addie set up the goal by finding C.J., who snuck just ahead of the Bruins defender for the goal. Minutes later, Johana Martinez successfully placed a corner kick just inside the post for the goal to put the home team ahead by a 2-0 margin.
The win is the fifth in a row for the Pioneers and extends the Nash Soccer Field record to 3-0 for the season for Spartanburg Methodist College. The five-match winning streak is the longest since a six-match winning streak in 2021.
