LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia – The first year of NAIA action ended abruptly for the No. 4 seed Spartanburg Methodist College women's soccer team in a 1-0 loss to No. 5 seed Talladega in the quarterfinals of the Continental Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Late in the contest, a late attack by the visiting Tornados saw SMC call for a foul in the final third of the pitch. The foul occurred in the final 18 yards of the field, resulting in a penalty kick. Ana Santos of the Tornados successfully placed the kick for the game-winning goal.
Spartanburg Methodist College ends its first season of NAIA play with a 10-5-1 mark. The 10 wins are the most of the five first-year NAIA programs and the fourth.time in five years that the Pioneers have recorded at least 10 wins. The success has Pioneers head coach Kyle Campbell excited for what they accomplished in 2024, on and off the pitch. "I hated to see our season end like this for our team. This team has worked hard from day one and I am very proud of their efforts. This team jumped right in and set a strong foundation for future success."
