Zy Bell Named CAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Spartanburg, S.C. - Zy Bell, a junior guard on the Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team from Anderson, has been named the Continental Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
"Zy brings a lot to our team that doesn’t always show up in the box score, including being a key defender," said SMC head coach Reid Walling.
Bell was a force on the floor while shutting down two potent offensive performers from Pioneers’ opponents. She also averaged five rebounds across two outings. As the team’s primary defender, the guard limited Columbia College (South Carolina) leading scorer Keyshuna Fair to 11 points on 4 of 18 field goals and 2 of 12 3-point field goals in a double-overtime contest last Tuesday. Fair entered the game shooting 42% overall making 38% of her 3-point field goal attempts. Then, Bell held Thomas University (Georgia) leading scorer Kennedy Collins to four points on 2 of 9 shooting, including 0 of 6 in 3-pointers, in a 69-60 win last Friday. Collins had been averaging 15.9 points on 43.6% shooting overall and 40% in 3-pointers.
